Sports Topics for Informative Speeches

Whether you are a sports aficionado or you are simply taking a class requiring you to write a speech on sports, you must have a solid topic established. Remember, the purpose of an informative speech is to give the audience information about a topic in a non-persuasive manner.

Card Collecting

Card collecting could make a good topic for an informative speech. Describe how collectors should pick cards and the relative values of cards. Explain what parts of a card make it more valuable and some of the rarities that are found in particular cards. You could also include information about local shops that sell and buy cards. Bring cards from your own collection to show.

Overview of a Sport

Pick one sport, such as football, baseball, golf, lacrosse or soccer, and give a brief overview of the sport. Include information about the history of the sport, such as where it was invented and by whom. Explain how often the sport is played today and what some of the major leagues for the sport are in different countries. Include whether or not the sport is part of the Olympics.

Favorite Sport

Report on your favorite sport. It should not be about why that sport is the best, as that would be a persuasive speech. Provide information about when you started to play the sport and how your skills developed in that sport. Include a description about any awards you won in the sport and whether you plan to continue playing, such as in high school or college.

Biography of a Sports Hero

Instead of picking a favorite sport to play, talk about your favorite athlete, whether the individual is from the past or the present. The person can be a major league hero or just a great athlete that you know from the town. Present a biography of the person. If you can meet with the person, include some direct quotations in the speech.
