Like the NBA, MLB, NHL, and other major American sports leagues, the NFL is split into divisions. There are 8 NFL Divisions with 4 teams each, split between two conferences. Divisions are important because the winners of each division automatically make the playoffs. Divisions also contain unique rivalries due to teams in each division playing each other twice a season.
What divisions are in the AFC & NFC?
Each Conference has four major divisions. They are split up by geographical location. The four division types are North, South, East, and West. This allows for rival teams to be in close proximity for divisional matchups.
Who is in the AFC East Division?
The four teams in the AFC East are the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, & New York Jets. The division was founded during the inaugural AFL season in 1960. The four teams in the AFC South division are the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, & the Tennessee Titans. This is the NFL's newest division having been founded in 2002. It was created after the expansion to 32 teams which led to the creation of the Houston Texans. The Colts have won the most division titles with nine. The Jaguars most recently won the division, snagging their second win in 2023.

All four teams are tied in division titles with 15 and has sent teams to the Super Bowl 18 times. The Chiefs most recently won the AFC West after winning their seventh consecutive title in 2023.
