What to Wear to Soccer Tryouts
Coaches are looking for the best players at soccer tryouts, not the best dressed. Unless otherwise stipulated by the tryout literature you've received, you won't need to wear special or uniform gear when you show up to show off your stuff. Still, wearing the proper footwear can give you the proper support you need to maneuver the ball and impress the coach. Dress comfortably with the proper components to keep your body safe from other aggressive hopefuls.
Shirts
You can come to tryout in nearly any type of T-shirt or jersey that you'd like. Bring a light and dark color so you can match your team in small-sided games. Dress according to the weather; if it's cool out, some soccer clubs will allow you to wear long sleeves under a short-sleeve shirt, but check the club rules beforehand. When you're admitted to the team, you'll receive a jersey as part of your uniform.
Shorts
Soccer shorts are generally loose and vary in length. A traditional soccer short hits around the mid-thigh area and is easy to move around in. If you're playing in colder weather, you may wear longer compression shorts under your loose soccer shorts. The waist band is elastic to allow for optimum maneuverability. Some coaches prefer that you tuck your shirt into your shorts, so watch to see how other players are wearing their shorts and jersey.
Cleats
Cleats are the most important piece of your soccer uniform. Designed to grip into the grass or turf, your cleats can give you an advantage at tryouts. Wear shoes with a cleat length relative to the type of surface you'll be playing on. In general, the softer the ground, the longer the cleat. You'll need longer cleats for playing on real grass, while playing on turf only requires short cleats. You can purchase removable cleats for various surfaces as well.
Shin Guards and Socks
Shin guards are a must for a soccer tryout. Soccer cleats have hard soles, and getting accidentally kicked in the leg while scrimmaging can shorten your tryout with an injury. Soccer socks are worn over the shin guards to keep them securely in place and add further protection.
