How to Make Cheerleader Pom-Poms

...

If you want to save a bit of cash without skimping on team spirit, you can make your own cheerleading pom-poms at home. By creating your own cheerleading gear, you can make them in your favorite team's colors and customize the size, depending on the age and preference of the intended cheerleader. Once you get the hang of making pom-poms, you'll be able to provide them for a whole squad of friends.

Cut 40 1-foot squares out of the plastic table runners for each pom-pom. You can make this process much easier if you fold the table runners several times and cut a bunch of 1-foot squares at once. If you want a two-toned pom-pom set, cut 40 squares of each color. If you want bigger pom poms, cut 18-inch squares, and if you want smaller ones, start with the 1-foot squares and trim the ends of the finished product to your liking.

Hold the squares together and carefully make 4-inch cuts on one of the edges, with the cuts going toward the opposite side of the square. Space the cuts approximately one-half to one-inch apart.

Move to the opposite side of the square and make 4-inch cuts in the same fashion, pointing toward the cut side of the square. When you’re finished cutting, there should be a 4-inch section down the middle that is untouched.

Use your hand to gather the squares in your fist down the uncut section. Use duct or electrical tape to hold the bunch in place. Use plenty of tape to make sure it’s sturdy.
