How to Wire Golf Cart Lights

It's easy to replace or add lights to a golf cart.

This technique can be used for any golf cart, whether it is powered by gas or electricity. Before beginning, gather all of your tools and materials in one spot that you can easily reach.

1. Disconnect the Negative Terminal on Battery

Go to the battery and disconnect the negative terminal.

A golf cart can have up to six batteries, so disconnect the negative terminal from each of the batteries. The batteries can be found under the front seat.

2. Mount Headlights

Mount the headlights. For best visibility, try to mount them as high as possible.

Use the mounting brackets to clamp the headlights. Clamp the other end of the brackets to the bumper or roll bar.

3. Place the Toggle Switch

Find choose a location for the toggle switch that controls the lights. This switch is usually mounted to the left side of the wheel, but you decide on a location that works best for you.

4. Drill and Thread for Switch

Drill a ½-inch hole in the spot where you're placing the switch. Sometimes the threaded portion of the switch is a different size, so check this first to make sure that the ½-inch hole will fit the piece. Make the appropriate size adjustments to the size of hole you must drill before drilling.

5. Connect Lead to Positive Battery Terminal

Take the inline fuser holder and connect one end of the lead to the positive battery terminal. You will need a solderless ring terminal to connect these pieces.

6. Place a Butt Connector

Place a butt connector on the other lead of the inline fuse holder. Extend the lead to the center terminal of the toggle switch. Use an insulated female spade terminal to connect the lead to the switch.

7. Run a 16-Gauge Wire from Terminal to Headlights

Get a 16-gauge wire. Run it from the toggle switch at the second terminal all the way to the headlights. Use a solderless butt connector to connect the wire to the headlights.

8. Secure the wires with nylon wire ties

Secure the wires with nylon wire ties. It is very important to make sure the wires are secured. Make sure to put electrical tape over the connections.

9. Mount the toggle switch

Mount the toggle switch. Connect it to the hole that was drilled in Step 4. Secure it with the screw.

10. Reconnect all of the negative terminals

Reconnect all of the negative terminals to the batteries. Be sure that each of the terminals is reconnected to their previous positions.

11. Toggle and Test Lights

Test the lights by turning the toggle switch to the on position. If the lights do not come on, check your wiring and battery terminals.
