Streamlined
Title of Step
Callaway Golf went through some significant changes as it began its fourth decade in 2012. The company, founded in 1982 by the late Ely Callaway, named Chip Brewer, a longtime golf equipment industry executive, as its new president and CEO.
It also sold its Ben Hogan and Top-Flite brands, which it had acquired in 2003, as part of its global restructuring. According to the company’s news release announcing the Top-Flite sale, the move was part of an effort toward streamlining with the objective of reducing costs and increasing the focus on Callaway's core business units.
Odyssey Putters
Title of Step
Callaway Golf sells its line of putters under the Odyssey brand name.
Callaway acquired Odyssey Sports Inc. in 1997, giving it a leading manufacturer of the most frequently used golf club. As of 2012, according to Odyssey, for "the last ten years, more pros across the six major golf Tours have trusted Odyssey to put them in the position to win."
Callaway Golf Ball Co.
Title of Step
The Callaway Golf Ball Co., formed in 1996, was the first subsidiary of Callaway Golf.
Since then, the company has introduced numerous innovations in golf ball construction. Among the products it has introduced are balls with two-piece, three-piece and four-piece construction. Callaway no longer lists Callaway Golf Ball Co. as a separate entity.
Callaway Golf Pre-Owned
Title of Step
Callaway Golf capitalized on the growing market for used golf equipment by introducing an online marketplace, Callaway Golf Pre-Owned.
The website is billed as “the official source for certified pre-owned and outlet Callaway Golf Products.” It also offers Callaway’s Trade In Trade Up program, through which golfers may trade in used Callaway clubs and apply the value toward new clubs. The website also serves as a marketplace for Ben Hogan used clubs, and offers refurbishment services for Callaway clubs.
uPro
Title of Step
Callaway uPro MX was launched in the spring of 2011 as the company’s second-generation GPS device. It was marketed as a product that provides a multi-gesture touchscreen and optional high-resolution aerial imagery showing actual layouts of courses through video flyovers and a website, callawayuxplore.com, on which users could track shot-by-shot statistics and other data. Callaway experienced technical difficulties after introducing uPro MX, however, and announced in August 2011 it would voluntarily recall the product and offer a refund through September 2011.
The company said it would continue to support the uPro MX through the uxplore website for users who were satisfied with its performance. As of the date of publication, Callaway does not list uPro MX among its product line, but it sells related accessories and the uxplore website lists tracking features as “upcoming.”
